Marion Foster (Dimond)

RIP to our classmate Jill Kittel, who married another classmate, Don Miller. She had lots of friends at Norb's in North Alton, where she worked many years. Notice from Facebook.

Well we have suffered another devastating loss to our Sammi’s family.

The lady responsible for Jill’s Italian Beef.

My wonderful and beautiful friend Jill Miller has passed. She was truly one of a kind and spoke her mind every day I knew her. I will miss her very much.

Rest In Peace my beautiful friend.

Mother's Day poem from Moine McGibany a few years ago. Share a memory and/or picture of your mom here.

Moms

Close your eyes

and think back in time

She quieted our cries

and sang us bedtime rhymes

She wiped away our tears

and calmed our greatest fears

She worked like a slave

and always gave and gave and gave

She always made things right

and filled a room with light

She taught us about hope

and taught us how to cope

She taught us to always be a dreamer

and now, some can only dream of her

We feel her presence every day

and know she’s never far away

I love you mom

Moine

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful Mother’s out there✌️

Thank you Marion for the history. It's another reminder of Alton's rich past. Several years ago I posted about an infamous pirate that made his way to the Alton area. He established a trading post and was selling guns and amo to the army during the Civil War. It was said that he is either buried in St. Louis or in Oakwood cemetery.

ALTON, Ill., Feb. 1 -- They may not be able to prove it beyond a doubt, but Illinois history buffs say they're convinced that notorious pirate Jean Laffite is buried in Alton.

Lafitte created havoc during the War of 1812 around New Orleans and Galveston, Texas.During a recent meeting of the board of the Alton Museum of History and Art, the Alton Telegraph reported, Alan Harrison, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, said his research indicates Lafitte is buried on a piece of land just south of Confederate Cemetery, the wooded site of an old Catholic cemetery whose stones are all gone.

Lafitte is believed to have died of pneumonia in 1854 at the age of 72 on a farm near Edwardsville, Ill.Harrison used Lafitte's journal to trace the pirate's history.

Lafitte was best known for his exploits near New Orleans and Galveston, but he also plied his trade outside the United States before retiring to the St. Louis area.

Even though Lafitte's journal was authenticated by the Library of Congress in 1956, historians say some still think it was forged by Lafitte's grandson.

Other theories have Lafitte buried on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.
