The History Behind The Party!

The “All ’60s & ’70s Class Party” in Alton, Illinois, is a cherished annual event that brings together alumni from Alton High School and Marquette Catholic High School who graduated during the 1960s and 1970s. This gathering has become a significant tradition, celebrating the camaraderie and shared history of these classes.

Origins and Evolution

The inaugural event took place on September 24, 2011, sparked by discussions among members of the Alton High School Class of 1967 Facebook group. They reflected on the loss of many classmates and questioned the need to wait every five or ten years for a reunion. This led to the idea of organizing a party that included all graduates from the 1960s, aiming to foster connections across different classes .

Over time, the event expanded to welcome graduates from the 1970s as well, recognizing the overlapping friendships and shared experiences among these cohorts. Organizers like Cathy Scoggins Weirich, Peggy Voumard, Theresa Judkins Powell, Linda Harder Basden, Carol Forsythe Mohme, and Dave Wickenhauser have been instrumental in planning and promoting the event, ensuring it reaches alumni both locally and those who have moved away .

Event Highlights

Typically held at Mac’s Downtown on 3rd Street in Alton, the party features live music, dancing, and opportunities for attendees to reconnect. For instance, the 2023 event included a performance by the local band Number 4 Combo, playing classics from the 1960s and 1970s . The event is free to attend, thanks to the generosity of Mac Lenhardt, the owner of Mac’s Downtown, who covers the costs of the space and entertainment.

While the focus is on Alton High and Marquette Catholic High School alumni from the 1960s and 1970s, the event also welcomes attendees from neighboring schools and communities, reflecting the interconnectedness of the region's social circles.

Community Engagement

Beyond being a reunion, the party often incorporates community service elements. For example, attendees have been encouraged to bring new socks to donate to local charities like Catholic Charities, The Salvation Army, and Oasis Women’s Center, supporting those in need during the colder months.
