Da Bears - Through the Years

 

 
The bears in the pits at the St. Louis Zoo in June 1922, were said to "never tire of putting on amusing shows for the zoo visitors."

 

 

Members of the Washington Glee and Mandolin Clubs, who have just returned from a successful tour, visit the St. Louis Zoo and serenade the bears, in February 1923.

 

 

In summer 1939, the Malayan sun bears find that ice is good to eat and also cools the feet.

A surprise snowfall in March 1958 provides a festive occasion for two polar bears at the St. Louis Zoo. Enjoying the bears' antics are Robert Brown and his son, Craig, of St. Louis, and Mr. and Mrs. John Diehl of    St. Louis.

 

 

The bear pits at the St. Louis Zoo undergo a $75,000 remodeling in July 1962.

 

 

Three Alaskan brown bear cubs huddle together and eye Zoo Director R. Marlin Perkins as he attempts to win their trust. They are among the new arrivals to the zoo in May 1965.

 

 

Mama Kamchatka bear apparently decided to let her 5-month-old triplet cubs come out into the open in May 1977, at the Zoo. It was the public's first glimpse of the cubs born in January 1977.

 

 

A rare Spectacled bear and her cub on their way to a feeding in March 1990 at the St. Louis Zoo. The species - the only bear native to South America- is considered critically endangered. The cub was born Feb. 4, 1990.
